The miraculous healing benefits of hemp oil have long captivated the owners of Hinterland Healing hence the monikers given to them by others – Mr. & Miss Hempy. Inspired by a deep respect for healing plants that stretches back through the generations in both their families, they opened their first store selling bespoke hemp oil products in 2017 in the subtropical hinterland of sunny Queensland, on Australia’s east coast.

Hemp oil is in Miss Hempy’s blood. Her grandmother was a fifth-generation Latvian hemp farmer who lived to the age of 107 and told stories about making hemp butter for the townsfolk and farm animals of her village. As a teenager, Miss Hempy was fascinated by her grandmother’s tales of how the animals remained thermoregulated in their barns throughout the cold Baltic winters, thanks to the benefits of the hemp plant.

Miss Hempy was born with a genetic mutation, lives with the pain of a spinal injury and is also on the ASD spectrum. Her challenges have led her to conduct in-depth research on natural healing methods to relieve pain and anxiety and improve overall health, with all roads leading to hemp oil and later, Indigenous bush remedies from around the world.

As Hinterland Healing’s resident pharmacognosist, Miss Hempy is studying molecular biology and genetics at tertiary level and spends hours a day researching the benefits of hemp oil and other plant-based remedies from the Australian bush, as well as Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and India, to incorporate into the store’s three hero brands: Cannopathy, Mr. and Miss Hempy and Sani Hemp. 

Mr. Hempy shares Miss Hempy’s passion for not only hemp oil and cannabinoids, but all kinds of botanical remedies from the plant kingdom. A former business analyst, his grandmothers were from Australia and the Mediterranean and both had their own way of treating all manner of ills using natural remedies like aloe vera, and concocting brews containing witch hazel, radium weed and milkweed. 

Having left the corporate world, he is now a popular public speaker on the benefits of hemp oil and medicinal cannabis, accompanying Miss Hempy to trade shows and expos like the Mind, Body Spirit Festival, where enthusiastic customers share their stories of relief from pain, arthritis, anxiety and a plethora of other ailments.

For Mr. & Miss Hempy, seeing customers laugh or burst into tears of joy after years of debilitating pain, do a little happy dance and feel like they finally have their life back, makes all their work worthwhile.

Hinterland Healing’s unique, handcrafted healing balms, oils, soaps, shampoos and skincare products for humans and pets are created without toxic sprays and chemicals and are vegan and not tested on animals.

In fact, it’s possible Hinterland Healing’s hemp oil products are the first in the world tested on celebrities, not on animals! Miss Hempy is a former entertainment journalist and TV presenter and has utilized that experience in a second family venture, organizing VIP eco tours for celebrities who want to interact with Australian wildlife. 

They’ve taken their Hinterland Healing hemp oil products backstage on major tours and have had A-list celebrities try them out, with great feedback. Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has been spotted wearing a Mr Hempy T-shirt and Australian musicians who’ve declared themselves fans include The Veronicas and the late guitarist Phil Emmanual, who used their hemp oil products for arthritis.
